When Lyman William Dike was born on October 9, 1918, in Lincoln, Vermont, his father, Luther, was 26 and his mother, Bertha, was 24. He married Marion Elizabeth Dike on May 6, 1937, in Whiting, Vermont. They had two children during their marriage. He enlisted in the Army on May 20, 1944 at Fort Deven's, Massachusetts. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Driver and also as Separated, with dependents. He was married just prior to going over seas. Lyman served as a Private First Class, Company C, 16th Infantry, 1st Infantry Division, U.S. Army during World War II. He resided in Orange County, Vermont prior to the war. Lyman "Died Of Wounds" received in action in Germany during the war and was awarded the Purple Heart.
