Dennis Harold Griggs was born on June 6, 1922, in Stephenville, Erath County, Texas. He was the son of Brice E. Griggs and Pearl B. Griggs Webb Hankins.

Dennis served in the 831st Bomber Squadron, 485th Bomber Group, Heavy, as a Second Lieutenant and Co-Pilot on the B-24H #42-52709 "Gawgia Peach" during World War II.

On June 13, 1944, his crew took off from Venosa, Italy, to bomb the ordnance depot at Milbertshofen north of Munich, Germany. Shot down by German ME109s, their aircraft crashed near Sillertshausen at about 11:00 hrs. All members were able to parachute out of the plane. Unfortunately, 2Lt Griggs was captured and taken to a police cell where he was murdered by enraged villagers.
