Clair Wilbert Welty was born on October 15, 1890. He was the son of Andrew J Welty and Mary Amstutz Welty.

Clair served in the 35th Aero Squadron as a Second Lieutenant during World War I. He was Killed in Action in France on November 19, 1918, and is now buried in the Apple Creek Cemetery, Apple Creek, Wayne County, Ohio, USA. 2Lt Welty was one of the 171 American servicemen who trained at the Third Aviation Instruction Center in France and died between 1917-1919.
