Loyd Birch Vorhies was born on April 12, 1897, in Alva, Oklahoma. He was the son of William Vorhies and Sallie Birch Vorhies.

Lloyd was a former student at Kansas State Agricultural College, Manhattan, KS, and entered the service from Oklahoma. He served as a First Lieutenant in the Aviation Section of the Signal Reserve Corps. 1Lt Vorhies was killed in an accident shortly after taking off from the airfield at Issoudun, France, on July 18, 1918. He is now buried in the Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Arlington County, Virginia, USA. He was one of the 171 American servicemen who trained at the Third Aviation Instruction Center in France and died between 1917-1919.
