Thomas Louis “Tommy” Spence, Jr. was born on April 17, 1896, in Thomasville, Georgia. He was the son of Thomas Louis Spence and Ruth Leona Williams Spence.

Thomas Louis, Jr. served in the 257th Aero Squadron as a Second Lieutenant during World War I. He was killed in an airplane accident in France on November 27, 1918, and is now buried in the St. Mihiel American Cemetery, Thiaucourt, France. He has a cenotaph located in the Laurel Hill Cemetery in Georgia. 2Lt Spence was one of the 171 American servicemen who trained at the Third Aviation Instruction Center in France and died between 1917-1919.

Spence Air Base was a United States Air Force base that operated from 1941 to 1961. It was later reopened at Spence Airport, named after Thomas L Spence.
