Vern Ivor Mounts was born on December 8, 1887, in Marion, Ohio. He was the son of Henry Newton Mounts and Elizabeth Grace Barnhart Mounts.

Vern enlisted in the Army on December 13, 1917. He underwent basic training at Kelly Field in Texas and then finished training as an aircraft mechanic after transferring to Camp Green, North Carolina. He left for France on July 15, 1918. Verne participated in the Aisore offensive in June 1918 at Chateau-Thierry Belleau Wood, the Battle of Saint-Mihiel, and part Meuse-Argonne offensive. Unfortunately, Verne died of Spanish influenza on October 6, 1918, in a hospital in Issoudun, France. Sgt Mounts was one of the 171 American servicemen who trained at the Third Aviation Instruction Center in France and died between 1917-1919. He is now buried in the Prospect Cemetery, Prospect, Marion County, Ohio, USA.
