Ernest Hunnewell Leach was born on November 4, 1895, in Massachusetts. He was the son of Reverend A. Judson and Mary Lewis Leach.

Ernest joined the American Field Service on ap 14, 1917, where he was attached to Section 18 to September 23, 1917. He then enlisted in the US Aviation Service in October and was sent to France for further training.

Cadet Leach was serving in the Army Aviation Instruction Detachment of the Signal Corps at the time of his death. He was killed in an airplane accident on January 21, 1918, in Issoudun, France, and is now buried in the St. Mihiel American Cemetery, Thiaucourt, France. Cadet Leach was one of the 171 American servicemen who trained at the Third Aviation Instruction Center in France and died between 1917-1919.
