Roger Weightman Jannus was born on December 25, 1886, in Washington, DC. He was married to Lucille Riviere (Jannus) Taylor Oeming.

Following his graduation from high school, Roger studied engineering. He earned a degree in civil engineering from Lehigh University, eventually ending up in Panama as an engineer on the Panama Canal.

Cpt Jannus was serving in the Signal Corps at the time of his death. He had just finished flying offensive air patrols when he died midair at the controls of a DH-4 on September 4, 1918, over Issoudun, France. He is now buried in the Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Arlington County, Virginia, USA. Cpt Jannus was one of the 171 American servicemen who trained at the Third Aviation Instruction Center in France and died between 1917-1919.
