Charles Alexander Hopkins was born on October 24, 1895, in New Jersey. He was the son of John M. and Mary Carroll Hopkins. He was educated at Newark public schools, Barringer High School, and Dartmouth College, Class of 1920. Dartmouth Track Star.

He enlisted in the American Field Service, sailing for France on May 5, 1917. After three months of service in Sections 526 and 184, T. M. U., he transferred to aviation. He received a commission as second lieutenant one month before his death. He was killed in an airplane accident in Tours, France, on January 30, 1918. His plane crashed into another airplane while training. He received his commission after his death. 2Lt Hopkins is now buried in the Fairmount Cemetery, Newark, Essex County, New Jersey, USA.
