Stuart Freeman was born on May 5, 1894, in Portland, Oregon. He was a Stanford graduate and a member of the Multnomah club, the Waverly Golf club, and of the Zeta Psi fraternity. He was formerly in the law offices of Ralph W. Wilbur in his city.

Stuart was a cadet in the aviation section of the signal corps, and received his preliminary training in the ground school at Berkeley and in a private aviation school. He died in a railroad accident in Issoudun, France, on May 10, 1918. 2Lt Freeman is now buried in the River View Cemetery, Portland, Multnomah County, Oregon, USA. He was one of the 171 American servicemen who trained at the Third Aviation Instruction Center in France and died between 1917-1919.
