Sgt Crang was one of the 171 American servicemen who trained at the Third Aviation Instruction Center in France and died between 1917-1919.

The DeWitt county post of the American Legion had been named the Crang-Bennett post. The name was chosen in honor of Welby Crang, the first DeWitt count man to lose his life in the service, and of Artie Bennett, the first DeWitt county man who died in action.
