William Chester Walter was born on May 22, 1919, in Steubenville, Jefferson County, Ohio. He served in the 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division, as a Private First Class during World War II. He died of injury on June 7, 1944, in Sainte-Mère-Église, France, caused by a grenade that was hit by German artillery fire shrapnel. This grenade exploded in the pocket of his comrade, killing three other paratroopers.

PFC Walter is now buried in the Normandy American Cemetery, Colleville-Sur-Mer, France.
