Henry Mathis Strobel was born on October 7, 1922, in Stearns County, Minnesota. He was the son of John P Strobel and Agnes B Gans Strobel.

After graduation from Cathedral High school, he attended St. John's university and was within a one-half year of completing his course when he went into the service. He went first to Beloit college in Wisconsin for a five months course preliminary to his appointment as an aviation cadet. He had his basic training in Chico, California. and advanced training at Fort Sumner. New Mexico, where he received his wings and commission on April 4, 1944. After spending a 10-days leave with his parents, he went to Kingman, Arizona.

Henry served in the 861st Bomber Squadron, 493rd Bomber Group, Heavy, as a Second Lieutenant and Co-Pilot on the B-17 #44-6278 during World War II. He was Killed in Action on January 10, 1945, in Belgium, on return from a mission to Köln, Germany.

2Lt Strobel is now buried in the Normandy American Cemetery, Colleville-Sur-Mer, France.
