Pilot of the P-38 Lightning 44-23651 as LtCol Darling's number 2, Captain Cranmer took off from A-11 at St-Lambert on a strafing mission over Broglie. However, 10km NE of Falaise, he was hit by flak at less than 200 feet. His right wing on fire, he tried to land in a field but hit the ground and exploded at 12:15.

He has a cenotaph located in Evergreen Cemetery, Springville, Utah County, Utah.
