John Burnam Lyman was born on February 7, 1921 in Cedar Rapids, Linn County, Iowa. He was the son of Lorraine Parker Lyman and Esther Meek Lyman. He served in the 11th Bomber Squadron, 341st Bomber Group, Medium as a First Lieutenant and Co-Pilot of an aircraft during World War II. john flew fuel and food to the stranded Chinese people braving the Burmese "Hump" time after time. He was Killed in Action on May 8, 1943 at the age of 22 and is now buried in the Golden Gate National Cemetery, San Bruno, San Mateo County, California, USA.

1Lt Lyman was one of over 2000 Americans who lost their lives defending China from their Japanese invaders from 1941-1945. He is commemorated on the The Monument to the Aviation Martyrs in the War of Resistance Against Japan in Nanjing, China.
