Sol Fishman was born in 1919. He served as a Navigator with the 395th Bomb Squadron, 40th Bomb Group, XX Bomber Command, World War II.

Following a bombing mission to Bangkok, Thailand, B-29 Superfortress #42-6282 ran out of fuel, due to a fuel transfer malfunction, and was forced to ditch on return to India in the Bay of Bengal. Four of the eleven airmen aboard were either injured upon impact with the water and drowned, or drowned attempting to abandon the sinking aircraft. Two of the four airmen's bodies were not found, and are listed on the tablets of the missing in the Manila American Cemetery.

Sol is now buried in the Plainville Cemetery, New Bedford, Bristol County, Massachusetts, USA. He was one of over 2000 Americans who lost their lives defending China from their Japanese invaders from 1941-1945. He is commemorated on the The Monument to the Aviation Martyrs in the War of Resistance Against Japan in Nanjing, China.
