Robert Malcolm Bellman was born on January 28, 1923 in New York. He entered the service in on December 2, 1942. 1Lt. Robert M. Bellman was a fighter pilot during WWII with the 75th Fighter Squadron, 23rd Fighter Group, 14th Air Force in China. He died while attempting to land his P-51 aircraft with a fragmentation bomb hung up in it's under wing shackle. Declining suggestions to bail out, he instead elected to land in order to save the aircraft. Upon landing, the bomb dropped free and exploded upon contact with the runway, killing Bellman instantly. He is now buried in the Cedar Park Cemetery, Paramus, Bergen County, New Jersey, USA.
1Lt Bellman was one of over 2000 Americans who lost their lives defending China from their Japanese invaders from 1941-1945. He is commemorated on the The Monument to the Aviation Martyrs in the War of Resistance Against Japan in Nanjing, China.
