Jonas Cecil Unruh was born on December 23, 1921 in McPherson County, Kansas. He was the son of Peter T. Unruh and Dina Buller Unruh. He served in the 375th Bomber Squadron, 308th Bomber Group, Heavy as a Staff Sergeant during World War II. He died on August 21, 1943 at the age of 21 in China and is now buried in the North Mennonite Cemetery, Montezuma, Gray County, Kansas, USA. Ssgt Unruh was one of over 2000 Americans who lost their lives defending China from their Japanese invaders from 1941-1945. He is commemorated on the The Monument to the Aviation Martyrs in the War of Resistance Against Japan in Nanjing, China.
