Albert Olafur Thorwaldson was born in 1918 in North Dakota. He was the son of Bjorn Thorwaldson and Gudny Margret (Johannesson) Thorwaldson. Albert served in the US Air Corps as a Captain and pilot with the China National Aviation Corp., based at Calcutta, India in World War II. His crashed plane was found by the US Army near Tengchung, China. There were no remains left or identifying ashes.

CPT Thorwaldson was one of over 2000 Americans who lost their lives defending China from their Japanese invaders from 1941-1945. He is commemorated on the The Monument to the Aviation Martyrs in the War of Resistance Against Japan in Nanjing, China.
