John H. Russell served in the 676th Bombardment Squadron, 444th Bombardment Group as a Staff Sergeant and tail gunner on B-29 aircarft during World War II. He was Killed in Action on September 2, 1944 flying aboard #42-6039 and is now buried in the Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, Lemay, St. Louis County, Missouri, USA. SSgt Russell was one of over 2000 Americans who lost their lives defending China from their Japanese invaders from 1941-1945. He is commemorated on the The Monument to the Aviation Martyrs in the War of Resistance Against Japan in Nanjing, China.
