William R. Lewis was born on July 12, 1921 in Maryland. He resided in Cecil County, Maryland prior to the war. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on April 6, 1942 in Wilmington, Delaware. He was noted as being employed as a Machinists apprentice and also as Single, without dependents. William served as a 1st Lt. in the U.S. Army Air Force and Pilot of an aircraft during World War II.

1Lt Lewis was declared "Missing In Action" during the war but is now buried in the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, Honolulu, Honolulu County, Hawaii, USA. He was one of over 2000 Americans who lost their lives defending China from their Japanese invaders from 1941-1945. He is commemorated on the The Monument to the Aviation Martyrs in the War of Resistance Against Japan in Nanjing, China but death date is inscribed as 1944-07-01.
