Lewis Seely Earnest was born on November 14, 1921 in Ohio. He served in the 25th Fighter Squadron, 51st Fighter Group as a First Lieutenant. He was declared "Missing in Action" on May 18, 1944 in a plane and is commemorated on the Walls of the Missing, Manila American Cemetery, Taguig City, Philippines. He also has a cenotaph located in Golden Gate National Cemetery, San Bruno, San Mateo County, California.

Lewis was one of over 2000 Americans who lost their lives defending China from their Japanese invaders from 1941-1945. He is commemorated on the The Monument to the Aviation Martyrs in the War of Resistance Against Japan in Nanjing, China.
