Clifford R. Durgin was born on June 1, 1921 in Maine. He resided in Strafford County, New Hampshire prior to the war. He enlisted in the Army on November 23, 1942 in Manchester, New Hampshire. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being Single, without dependents. Clifford served as a Private First Class, Engineers, U.S. Army during World War II.

Clifford died in the "Line Of Duty" of a non-battle related incident during the war. He was originally interred in Mausoleum #2, Schofield Barracks and was later interred in the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, Honolulu, Honolulu County, Hawaii, USA on January 26, 1949. He was a food dropper in an aircraft at the time of his death.

He was one of over 2000 Americans who lost their lives defending China from their Japanese invaders from 1941-1945. He is commemorated on the The Monument to the Aviation Martyrs in the War of Resistance Against Japan in Nanjing, China.
