James Thomas Caraway was born on May 21, 1920 in Desert, Collin County, Texas. He was the son of James Oscar Caraway and Myrtle M. Mackey Caraway. James served in the US Air Corps as a First Lieutenant. He was a Pilot of the F-7A #42-64189 during World War II. He was Killed in Action on August 11, 1944 when his plane went down over "The Hump" (the Himalaya mountains between India and China) and is now buried in the Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, Lemay, St. Louis County, Missouri, USA in a common grave with his crew. He also has a cenotaph located in Farmersville IOOF Cemetery, Farmersville, Collin County, Texas.

James was one of over 2000 Americans who lost their lives defending China from their Japanese invaders from 1941-1945.
