Joseph M. Barbaro was born on February 20, 1924. He resided in Kings County, New York prior to the war. Joseph served as a Private First Class and Asst. Engineer on C-109 #42-51921, 1345th Army Air Force Base Unit, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II. C-109 #42-51921, with a crew of 5, was involved in a mid-air collision with B-24D #42-40875 during either takeoff or landing at Luliang, China. The entire crew was lost in this crash. Joseph was declared "Missing In Action" in this crash during the war. He is now buried in the Long Island National Cemetery, East Farmingdale, Suffolk County, New York, USA.

Joseph was one of over 2000 Americans who lost their lives defending China from their Japanese invaders from 1941-1945. He is commemorated on the The Monument to the Aviation Martyrs in the War of Resistance Against Japan in Nanjing, China.
