Robert C. Pitman was born on January 20, 1920 in Michigan. He was the son of Claude W. Pitman and Laura A. Burns Pitman. Robert served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a Technician Fifth Grade in the 1st Engineer Combat Battalion, 1st Infantry Division. He died on August 9, 1944 in Mayenne, France at the age of 24 and is now buried in Saybrook Cemetery, Ashtabula, Ashtabula County, Ohio, USA. His name is commemorated on the First Infantry monument in Mons, Belgium and ranked as a Corporal.
