Russell M. Lamar was born on September 8, 1914. He was the son of Gary McKinney Lamar and Mattie Ellen Pruitt Lamar. He graduated from Leaksville high school and took one year in North Carolina State Textile college, Raleigh. He entered the service on October 20, 1943, took 17 weeks' basic training at Camp Fannin, Texas, and was transferred to Fort George Meade, Md., on March 5, 1944. He went to England in April. Russell served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a Private in the 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He took part in the heavy fighting on the shores of Normandy and later in the more advanced positions inland. He was Killed in Action on July 30, 1944 in France at the age of 29 and is now buried in Woodlawn Cemetery, Spray, Rockingham County, North Carolina, USA.
