Ralph F. Merrill was born on September 9, 1924 in Decatur, Otsego County, New York. He was the son of Edward and Mae M. Merrill. He entered the Army on November 12, 1942, took his basic training at Camp Croft, S. C., and went overseas in April, 1943. Ralph served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a Private First Class in the 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He served in the North African and Sicilian campaigns and was transferred to England after which he participated in the Normandy invasion. He was Killed in Action on July 28, 1944 in France at the age of 19 and is now buried in Maple Grove Cemetery, Worcester, Otsego County, New York, USA.
