Charles Manning Hefner was born on February 28, 1925 in Henderson County, North Carolina. He was the son of Eskridge Ellishie Hefner and Lillie Mae Reid Hefner. Charles served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a Private in the 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He died from his wounds received in battle on July 31, 1944 in St. Lo, France at the age of 19 and is now buried in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Valley Hill, Henderson County, North Carolina, USA. His name is also listed on a monument in Oakdale Cemetery, Hendersonville, NC.
