Jesse Wayne Layton was born on October 6, 1917 in Clinton County, Indiana. He was the son of Donald Dewey Layton and Ida Gladys Merrill Layton. He entered the army on November 22, 1941, a month before Pearl Harbor and after training in various camps in this country reached England in July, 1942, later serving in North Africa, Sicily, Italy and France. Jesse served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a Sergeant in HQ Company, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He was Killed in Action on August 9, 1944 in Mayenne, France at the age of 26 and is now buried in Bunnell Cemetery, Frankfort, Clinton County, Indiana, USA.
