Richard Sims was born in 1923 in Butler County, Alabama. He enlisted at Fort McClellan on 2 April 1943. He worked on a farm before he enlisted. Richard served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a Sergeant in the 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He was killed in action near the Rösslerhof Farm outside of Langerwehe in a terrible firefight with the German Combat Group "Kampfgruppe Eisenhuber" named after his Commander Hauptmannn (Captain) Eisenhuber. Even Eisenhuber didn´t survive the war. Sims was killed in action three weeks later at Gürzenich, a suburb of Düren. He was buried at Golzheim, a small rural town 10 kilometers east of Düren. He was later moved to the Henri-Chapelle American Cemetery in Belgium.
