Willis Eugene Pickell was born on September 24, 1918 in Emmet County, Iowa. He received his basic training in the quartermaster corps at Fort Frances E. Warren, Wyo., leaving there on Oct. 20, 1942 to be transferred to Fort George G. Meade, Md. He left the United States on Dec. 11, 1942, and was sent directly to North Africa. Willis served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a Private First Class in the 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He was Killed in Action on September 20, 1944 in Germany at the age of 25 and is now buried in Netherlands American Cemetery and Memorial, Margraten, Netherlands.
