Rowland A. Weeks was born on March 20, 1919, a graduate of Lawrence High School in 1935. Weeks worked in the Kimmel department store in Cedarhurst, prior to his entry into the service. He joined the army as a private and rose in the ranks until he was selected as a candidate for officer's training. He won his commission at Fort Benning. Ga on June 27. 1942. The infantry officer was sent overseas in August, 1942, and in the following December, he was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds received in the African theater of operations. According to the citation, which he received, he was wounded by shrapnel west of Oran, in Algeria, but managed to get back to his company and continue in active service. Later, Captain Weeks was decorated with the Silver Star for his outstanding action on a Tunisian battlefield. He also participated in the Italian campaign, prior to going to France. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a Captain in the 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He led one of the first waves of Yankee soldiers across the railroad tracks into Aachen, Germany. He died on October 13, 1944, as the result of wounds received in action. He is now buried in Long Island National Cemetery, East Farmingdale, Suffolk County, New York, USA.
