Winfred E. Shortt was born on July 16, 1923. He was the son of Frank Oscar Shortt and Ida Lula Breedlove Shortt. Winfred served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a Staff Sergeant in the 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He died on June 16, 1944 at the age of 20 and is now buried in Clinch Valley Memorial Cemetery and Mausoleum, Richlands, Tazewell County, Virginia, USA. His name is commemorated on the First Infantry monument on Omaha Beach, France and ranked as a Private.
