James A. Agars was born on September 26, 1918 in Troy, Rensselaer County, New York. He was graduated from St. Lawrence's School and Catholic Central High School in 1937. Agars entered the service on Feb. 10 1942 and received his basic training with the Field Artillery at Fort Bragg. N. C. and later was transferred to Indiantown Gap. Pa. After six months training, he was sent overseas and landed with the First Division in Africa where he was wounded and awarded the Purple Heart which later sent to his parents. He recovered from his wounds and went to Italy where he sustained a broken ankle in an accident. His outfit was ready to leave for another front and he begged his comrades to carry him to the ship so that he could remain with them. They arrived in England and by the time they were ready for action. Agars' ankle had mended and he joined them. Agars' division was among those that landed in France on D-Day. He was Killed in Action on July 6, 1944 and is now buried in Saint Mary's Cemetery, Troy, Rensselaer County, New York, USA.
