William Heyward Messer was born on November 5, 1919 in Tallahassee, Leon County, Florida. He was the son of James Messer and Eliza Brokaw McDougall Messer. William served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a First Lieutenant in the 18th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He was declared "Missing in Action" on June 6, 1944 during the invasion on Omaha Beach, France and is commemorated on Tablets of the Missing, Normandy American Cemetery, Colleville-sur-Mer, France. He also has a cenotaph located in Oakland Cemetery, Tallahassee, Leon County, Florida, USA.
