Sylvin Joe Baker was born on February 4, 1922 in Van Hook, Mountrail County, North Dakota. He was the son of George Martin Baker and Rebecca Margaret DeTienne Baker. Sylvin served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a Private First Class in the 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He died on June 6, 1944 during the invasion on Omaha Beach, France at the age of 22 and is now buried in Normandy American Cemetery, Colleville-sur-Mer, France.
