Herman Fred Ausnehmer was born on February 18, 1924 in Ohio. He attended South High School and was employed by General Fireproofing Co. He entered the service on February 13, 1943 and trained at Camp Wheeler, Ga., and Camp Joyce Kilmer, NJ, and went overseas in November 1943. Herman served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a Private in the 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. His assault platoon came ashore at 6.45 am, probably on Fox Green in front of the draw to Colleville-sur-Mer. This draw was defended by two German bunkers (strong points WN-61 and WN-62), from which the enemy strafed the landing beach with machine guns and other weaponry. He was Killed in Action on June 6, 1944 during the invasion on Omaha Beach, France but his current burial place is unknown.
