Craig Benjamin Hannum was born on May 15, 1920. He was the son of Olin H. Hannum and Maugery Robert Coor Hannum. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a First Lieutenant in the 18th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He died on June 7, 1944 at the age of 24 and is now buried in Golden Gate National Cemetery, San Bruno, San Mateo County, California, USA. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with the 18th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 8 June 1944, in France. First Lieutenant Hannum's intrepid actions, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty at the cost of his life, exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 1st Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
