When Leo E. Apanasewicz was born on August 28, 1915, in Cleveland, Ohio, his father, Adolf, was 37 and his mother, Alexandra, was 21. He married May Curtis in June 1944 in Honiton, Devon, England. They had one child during their marriage. He was a graduate of South High School, Western Reserve University and St. Louis University of Medicine. Leo, 28, completed his internship at St. John's Hospital in July 1942. He was commissioned a Lieuternant and promoted to Captain in January 1944. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the 1st Medical Battalion, 1st Infantry Division. His division landed on the shores of Normandy on June 6, 1944, and suffered heavy casualties. Within a half an hour of landing, Apanasewicz received the wound that ultimately would prove to be fatal. He died on June 15, 1944 is now buried in Cambridge American Cemetery, Cambridge, United Kingdom.
