Ralph Sylvester, Jr., aged 19, was born on December 23, 1924. He was the son of Ralph E. Sylvester and Blanche Esther Perry Sylvester. He graduated from Smithville High School in 1942. He was employed at the Matthews Brothers Stone Company up to the time of his Army induction on March 24, 1943. He was assigned to duty in the 363rd Infantry Regiment, 91st Infantry Division and went overseas on March 24, 1944. He was a machine gun specialist and was in charge of two machine gun crews in the Italian Campaign. He was killed in action near Naples, Italy on October 20, 1944 and is now buried in the Clover Hill Cemetery, Harrodsburg, Monroe County, Indiana, USA.
