Vernon W. Schaper, aged 20, was born on October 23, 1923 in Portage, Columbia County, Wisconsin. He was the son of Otto Eugene Schaper and Hilda Wilhelmina Seifert Schaper. Vernon attended the Lutheran school and Portage high school and enlisted in the Army on Feb. 5, 1943. He served in the 363rd Infantry Regiment, 91st Infantry Division as a Private during World War II. He was Killed in Action on October 5, 1944 during the battle in the area of Ponzalla, Italy and is now buried in the Oak Grove Cemetery, Portage, Columbia County, Wisconsin, USA.
