Howard M. Russell, aged 31, was born on July 11, 1913. He was the son of Hiram Russell and Vira Mae Wolfe Russell. He graduated from St. Lawrence University, Canton, N. Y., in 1937. Corporal Russell was voted the "boy most likely to succeed." Later he studied at the University of Toledo, Ohio, for a master's degree. He was a member of Beta Theta Pi fraternity.

Prior to his induction into the army In February, 1943, he was employed at the Fostoria, Ohio, branch of the Union Carbide & Carbon Corporation. He served in the 363rd Infantry, 91st Infantry Division during World War II. Howard died in an American hospital in northern Italy on March 2, 1945 and is now buried in the Westbury Friends Cemetery, Westbury, Nassau County, New York, USA.
