When Raymond Hooker Batchelder was born in November 1897 in Vermont, his father, George, was 26 and his mother, Dora, was 24. He had two brothers. He entered the military service in Massachusetts and served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Private in Company F, 1st Engineer Combat Battalion, 1st Infantry Division. He died from his wounds received in battle on September 12, 1918 in France at the age of 20 and is now buried in St. Mihiel American Cemetery, Thiaucourt, France. He also has a cenotaph in Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Saint Johnsbury, Caledonia County, Vermont, USA.
