Alexander M. Greig entered the military service in Wisconsin. He served in the 363rd Infantry, 91st Infantry Division as a Staff Sergeant during World War II. He was Killed in Action on July 8, 1944. On that day, Staff Sergeant Greig’s unit was in action against German forces during the Rome-Arno Campaign. Staff Sergeant Greig’s courageous actions and extraordinary heroism that day, at the cost of his life, earned him the U.S. Army's second highest award for valor, the Distinguished Service Cross. He is now buried in the Florence American Cemetery, Impruneta, Italy.

Distinguished Service Cross Citation (Synopsis) Staff Sergeant Alexander M. Greig (ASN: 36275205), United States Army, was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company L, 363d Infantry Regiment, 91st Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 7 July 1944. Staff Sergeant Greig's intrepid actions, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty at the cost of his life, exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 91st Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
