John Howard Wills was born on June 21, 1895 in Auburn, Lee County, Alabama. He was a graduate of the U. S. Military Academy at West Point, Class of 1916. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a Major in the 1st Engineer Combat Battalion, 1st Infantry Division. He was Killed in Action on July 29, 1918 and is now buried in Suresnes American Cemetery, Suresnes, France. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for extraordinary heroism in action in France. Adjutant of his brigade at Berzy-le‑Sec, France, July 21, 1918, he repeatedly displayed great bravery, making trips among troops under violent fire, and by his courage and initiative contributed materially to the success of the engagement. He also has cenotaph in Pine Hill Cemetery, Auburn, Lee County, Alabama, USA.
