A grave similar to the Commonwealth War Grave Commission upright Gravestone.

 

Sergeant David Beattie Served in the 105th Infantry Regiment of the 27th Infantry Division during World War 1.  He was killed on August 30, 1918 during artillery fire while fighting on the Dikkebus Line near Poperinge, Belgium.

 

Sergeant Beattie was born in 1896 and was from Troy, New York.  He joined the New York National Guard and deployed along the border with Mexico in 1916. During World War I, his regiment was assigned to fight in the British Secotr of the line in Belgium.  He served as a Forward Observer.

 

Sgt. Beattie was buried at the Lijssenthoek Commonwealth War Graves Cemetery and his family requested that his remains not be disturbed.  His family had the following inscription carved into his tombstone:  "He Lived By Faith, He Still Lives.”
