The B-24 Liberator 42-42511 of the 392nd BG 8th USAAF crashed a few hundred meters from here, at 1515 on March 18th 1944 on the return trip of a bombing run over Friedrichshafen. The B-24's fuel tanks were burning from German fighter hits, but all 11 of the crew were able to bail out successfully 30 seconds before the inevitable explosion.
Three of their wounded were first treated at the Colmar hospital before being transferred to various POW camps. Another B-24 of the same Group crashed that day at Chatenois.
Passerby, never forget these airmen gave their lives for our freedom.
