U.S. Observation Post

Details:

Located southeast of the barracks. It is just meters away from the Hesse-Thuringia border.  Monument A 10 meter tall wooden observation post. 


The Observation Post at Point Alpha was a key strategical OP used by the U.S. during the Cold War. Located on what used to be the border between East and West Germany, OP Alpha was used first by the 14th Armored Cavalry Regiment and then by the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment in 1972. Overlooking the Fulda Gap, OP Alpha was instrumental in preventing Warsaw Pact forces from invading West Germany through the Fulda Gap.
