On the east side of the D-964, 1.5 kilometers southeast of Mouzon, directly at the side of the road. Marker

A round concrete boulder with a raised five point star.  One of 23 such boulders marking significant sites for the 2nd Infantry division in WWI.  This marker commemorates the 5^th Marines crossing the Meuse about 2 km south of here on the night of 10-11 November 1918, moving downstream (north) using the river bank for cover, and then taking Belle Fontaine Ferme (shown in the middle of the image) on the morning of the 11^th. Immediately off to the left of the image is Warmonterme Ferme and la Scierie Ferme. The Marines referred to this group of three adjacent farms as a small village. The Germans were deployed in the ditches along the D964 and in the woods at the top of the ridge to the east.

The Marines were seeking to link up with units of the 6^th Marines which were supposed to have crossed the Meuse just north of Mouzon but had failed to do so. Realizing there appeared to be only Germans to their north and east, the Marines dug in throughout their “village” and awaited developments. It was here, probably at the gate to la Scierie Ferme, early in the afternoon of 11 November 1918, a party of Germans under of flag of truce informed the Marines the Armistice was in effect.
